Seeking Volunteers for Refereeing and First Aid

First Aid Volunteers

We’re looking for some people who are qualified (First Aid Responder or above) who are willing to provide first aid cover at Five Oaths.

What would I need to do?

  • Be “on call” for one or two shifts (which will be slightly longer than a regular monster slot to allow coverage during mealtimes and free play)
  • While on call, wear a radio tuned to a specific first aid channel, so you can hear about first incidents, but not all of the referee chatter
  • Respond to first aid incidents as they arise during your shift and document them appropriately
  • Hand over any relevant information to the next volunteer as they come on shift

How does it work with monstering?

If you wish, you may count your shifts as monster slots and remain in play, but you can also do monster slots if you want to, either while on call or during other slots. If you do decide to monster while on call we will assign you non critical monster roles to make it easy for you to leave

How does it work with playing? Can I leave camp?

You can leave camp and in most respects play as you normally do. We would ask you not to take command of a linear while on call as dropping out to manage an incident is likely to be awkward for yourself and others

If you want to volunteer for this role, email info@fiveoaths.com, including your PHECC pin or a scan of your certificate by next Saturday (23rd August)

Encounter Referees

We are also looking for volunteers who are interested in spending one or both of their monster slots as Encounter Referees.

What does an Encounter Referee do?

To run an encounter, you’ll need to:

  • Read over the encounter document so you know what needs to happen (We will send this to you before the event and you’ll get a brief from the Event Lead or Head of Plot)
  • Round up your monsters (in collaboration with the Event Team member assigned to the monster room in that slot)
  • Brief your monsters, ensuring they understand what they need to do and how their stats work
  • Deploy monsters in the field and manage respawns
  • Manage any special rules associated with an encounter (e.g. calling effects when players trigger a trap)
  • In larger encounters, direct periphery refs to hazards based on your knowledge of the plan for the encounter

What are the physical demands of this role like?

  • This role requires walking over uneven ground and at times standing for long periods.
  • The risk of being struck by larp weapons is low, but not absent.
  • Some night time encounters require you to move through the woods in low light, but if you let us know that your night vision is limited we can avoid assigning you to one of these

Do I need reffing experience?

Not at all, we’d love to see new people getting into it, though obviously if you’ve reffed for other games we’d also love to have you (and your transferable experience). When you’re getting started, you’ll have an experienced referee with you to support you with running your encounters until you’re ready to fly on your own

How well do I need to know the rules?

It is helpful to have a solid grasp of the rules as you will need to answer questions from monsters and players but you don’t need to know everything; you’ll have an opportunity to look over your encounters in advance and check the rulebook or ask questions, and you can always check with an event team member in the field if you need to

Am I going to see a lot of spoilers?

You’ll probably see slightly more than you would while monstering, but we’ll try to avoid assigning you anything from a plotline that you’re heavily involved in IC

I’ve reffed for you before, should I still get in touch?

Yes please! We’d like to make this a more formal system and we don’t want to just assume that you’ll do this for us again just because you’ve done it in the past

To volunteer for this role, email info@fiveoaths.com by next Saturday (23rd August)
