You may notice in your character sheet on the player database that you can now see a list of Known Locations, as the third tab beside the “Feats and Spells” and “Background” tabs. This is something we have been working on for a while, that we hope will add a level of immersion to your experience of the game.
So how does it work? As a starting character, you will have access to a list of Locations based on your Realm Feat. This means that for Leasiar they will know the Locations of three Realms, and for Weeping characters they may know the Locations of a Realm they may have never visited in this life. How this gels with your character is up to you. Maybe your character has taken the Path of Many Candles recently, but when they travel through Bruid they are recognised wherever they go, or find clues left by their former self. Maybe your character woke up with bleeding eyes in a forest grove, but when their wandering feet take them north into Siabhal they can’t shake the feeling that they’ve been there before.
There are also certain places that every character knows in every Realm. These are generally the capital city of each Realm, a well-known smaller settlement, a famous Riding, and the most obvious Region. This is supposed to represent a background knowledge that any character would have, however uninterested in history or geography they are.
For those of you who have given us details of your character’s home place in your character background, you will generally find that this has been represented as a Location, which is not generally known to those without specialised knowledge. If you didn’t specify such a place in your background and would like to have one shown, please get in touch with us at info@fiveoaths.com
For those with Five Realms Lore, the lands of Tirneach are an open book. They know every Location from every Realm. We advise that these learned lorists keep a close eye on Location descriptions going forward, as we will be changing the descriptions from time to time to take account of developments in the plot of the world of Five Oaths.
Finally, as your character attends Events and fights alongside their fellow gallóglaigh there, they will gain familiarity and knowledge of the world. This will generally mean that they gain an additional Location that they didn’t have before. If your character happens to be fighting in their home Realm or is already very learned in geography and history this might not mean there is any change, but for a gallóglach who has no great knowledge of the Realms this can be a great way to see the world!
We are also working on incorporating our downtime system onto the Player Database, and the list of Locations will be an integral part of that. As we incorporate it there may be some tweaks to how downtime works, and these changes will be reflected in the Player’s Handbook.
