Hi Gang,
So as promised in our last post, it’s insurance time (yaaaay). For the time being, we will be continuing with the same insurance model and provider, however as mentioned we’ve shifted the renewal date slightly, which should allow you to still get 3 games worth of coverage from the policy. We are making some other changes to how we handle the policy however, in the interest of reducing the amount of workload insurance management creates for us. I’m gonna headline those changes, then explain why we’re doing them, in the interests of transparency
Previous: Attendees don’t need insurance for their first 3 games
New: Players don’t need insurance for their first game. Monsters don’t need insurance at all.
Ok, so to take a walk down memory lane, the “first 3 games without insurance” offer started when Five Oaths had its policy through a company called Country Sports Ireland. This offering was made directly through them – previously everyone had needed a policy no matter what. About a year ago, we switched to a different insurance provider, who did not offer that policy, but did offer reasonably priced guest memberships, so we elected to continue it ourselves. However over the course of the following year, managing guest memberships came to be, to put it bluntly, a colossal pain in the neck, especially as they turned out to be limited in number. So in the interests of reducing that work and preserving limited event team sanity, we’re now only going to be offering guest insurance to players attending their first game. As a side benefit of freeing up some overhead, though, we are now able to cover the insurance costs of anyone attending on a monstering ticket.
Pro-Rating for signups mid year is getting worse
The next change is mostly invisible – anyone joining the policy during the year will unfortunately now get a less favourable rate than they would have before. In the past we essentially built our own pro-rating by just buying guest memberships for anyone who signed up between events, which worked out cheaper than the rates CCC3 (our insurer) offer for mid-year signup. This ended up creating a lot of work and nearly led to us running out of guest insurance spots, so we won’t be doing it going forward.
Proof of Insurance will now be required to buy a ticket.
When we go live with tickets for the next event, as part of the signup we’ll be requiring proof of insurance. If you’re insured with us, just telling us that and using the same email will be ok. If you’re on your first event, just telling us that will be ok. If you’re monstering, we’ll still ask, so we know if we need to cover you. If you are not on our insurance, not monstering and not attending your first game, you will need to provide us with some proof that you have public liability cover for LARPing in Ireland, or we will bounce your ticket and you will not be admitted to the site. I know none of this is particularly good news (unless you’re one of our permanent monster crew, I guess), but I hope you can appreciate that we’re doing this so that we can focus our efforts on running the best dang game we can.
