As per our previous post, to meet the requirements of our venue’s insurance Five Oaths needs to have public liability insurance in place, and due to the changing insurance landscape we have been unable to secure this at a flat rate as we did before. We will now need to have insurance in place for each player at the event.
Thank you to all those who participated in the player survey. Based on the positive response, we will be proceeding with the event on the 19th-21st of August on this insurance basis. This post provides more information about our proposed approach.
Since last week we have further information on the options available:
If we arrange public liability insurance cover on a club basis our option is Country Sports Ireland (https://countrysportsireland.org/), and the cost will be €50 per person insured this way. This will incidentally also provide cover for a range of activities including fishing, mountain hiking, etc. The deadline for arranging this insurance is 5 days before the event.
Country Sports Ireland also offer individual insurance, and for those who are resident in Northern Ireland this price is cheaper at £37.50 (approximately €10 cheaper). This will cover the individual for activities in the Republic of Ireland, and will cover live-action roleplaying.
Country Cover Club (https://www.ccc3.co.uk/home) also offer public liability insurance which covers the Republic of Ireland which includes live action roleplaying among other activities. They also have more options for cover, for example 6 months or 30 days. They also offer 2 day insurance but we would ask players not to use this as our events are spread over 3 days. We cannot arrange club insurance via Country Cover Club unfortunately, but they are an additional option.
The above insurance options will provide cover for the individual for our events, and also for other LARPing events on the island of Ireland, including training at St. Anne’s Park for example.
We are proposing to proceed on the following basis:
- The Event Team and those availing of the concession rate for insurance will be insured on an annual basis through the group insurance scheme. We need a minimum of 7 members for the Country Sports Ireland group insurance scheme, but we should be fine based on the numbers we have.
- Other players have the option of getting insurance for themselves on an individual basis or joining the group insurance scheme. Players who are getting their own insurance using one of the above vendors will be required to provide proof that this insurance is in place on the 19th of August when signing in for the event. Players who want to join the group insurance are asked to pay by Thursday the 11th of August so we can get it in place in time.
- Players who are resident in Northern Ireland have the option of availing of insurance which is cheaper on that basis. Players resident in NI may still partake in the group insurance scheme.
- Players who already have public liability insurance through Country Sports Ireland for other purposes will be covered for our event.
We will be sending a message to each player who is signed up for the next event asking what their preferred option for insurance is, out of the following three options:
- Insurance through the group scheme
- Arrange individual insurance
- Concession rate
We have set up a purchase link on our Tickets page for those who want to get insurance through the group scheme at either the full rate or the concession rate of 20 euro.
Regarding the concession rate, we would like to note again that we are very aware that this sudden change to insurance will cause issues for the unwaged, students, monster players and any less able to immediately pay this unexpected cost. It is also far from ideal for those intending to attend less than the full number of events in the next year and those hoping to try out the hobby. We want to make it clear that anyone who needs to can avail of the concession rate with no questions asked. This will be on the honour system and is intended to help keep our game accessible.
In case you missed it on our earlier announcement, we plan to make monster tickets for A Season of Renewal free of charge. This means that those planning to monster will only need to cover the cost of insurance. Monster ticket holders will be able to avail of the same options for insurance as other players.
