Season of Recovery Updates – Player Reps, XP Caps, and Nut Policy

Hello there folks! I’ve you’ve received this email, purchased a ticket to our next event, A Season of Recovery, or you’re subscribed to our mailing list! We’re putting the last few touches on our event, and have a few messages and updates to pass along before we hit the field tomorrow. If you have any questions on the below, reach out to us in the field (event team members are in the yellow hi-vis) or via info@fiveoaths.com. See you in Collon!

The Five Oaths Team

We’re introducing a new crew role this event, which we hope will help everyone get involved in the game; Player Reps!

Our first two player reps, who have volunteered to take the role for the remaining events in 2024 are Dave Madden and Síofra Ní Lochlainn. If you don’t know who they are, come to the new player briefing at 6pm Friday by the firepit and they’ll be there to introduce themselves

So, what’s a player rep?

Reps are members of our crew who will act as an OOC point of contact for players who need some advice or help in getting involved in the game. Things they might be able to help with include:

  • If you’re a new player or returning after a hiatus and you’d like someone to help you figure out how to larp (again)
  • If you feel out of the loop and want to get up to speed on what’s going on
  • If you’d like some advice on how to get involved with plot
  • If you’re feeling isolated or struggling to make connections in character

What can they do for you?

Depending on what your problem is, they might be able to provide you with the information that you’re looking for or point you towards someone who can, provide some advice on how to solve your problem, or introduce you to players/characters who can get you involved in an aspect of the game you’re interested in.

How do I ask them for help?

One player rep will be on duty at all times between time in and time out each day, including during free play and meal periods, (but if you see they’re making or eating their food, please wait until they’re finished before approaching them).

If you need their help; approach them, put your finger in the air if you’re in an IC area, say you have a player rep question, and they’ll take you to one side and talk to you about it. If they say you need to wait, please be patient, they will be with you as soon as possible.

Important things to note

  • Player rep is not an IC position, so don’t try to challenge them for it
  • Player reps are not event team members, so if you have concerns about someone breaching the code of conduct, it’s best to come straight to one of us. If you do end up discussing something with them that they feel is better addressed by an event team member, they’ll pass it on to us

Is there anything players need to do to support them?

Yes! If one of the player reps approaches you, uses the phrase “by special request of the Thane” saying that they have someone that they want you to help out in some way (e.g. assist with their first ritual, take out on a linear, or practice fighting with) you are expected to do your best to accommodate their request. If you can’t do it for some reason, let them know that and if possible suggest a time when you will be available or another player who might be able to help.

Feat Caps – Something To Think About!

After our last event, we polled players about the idea of introducing a limit on how much XP a character can have- This came about as, by the time we finish this year, there will be some player characters who have double the amount of Feats that they started with.

Over time, this rapid gaining of XP could lead to characters losing ‘focus’ and becoming very skilled in many areas, and potentially pulling well ahead of newer characters, which wasn’t a design goal we intended when building the game.

As such, based on the feedback we received after Event 7, we’ll be looking at introducing an XP cap in the near future- We haven’t settled on where it will be, or when it will be introduced, but we’d like to get it out there that this is something we’re hoping to implement.

A Reminder About Nuts On Site

We’d like to remind all players about the policy outlined in the event guide regarding nuts onsite: Players are not to bring nuts or nut-based foods onto the site in any capacity. This includes nut bars, peanut butter, etc.

This is a hard and inflexible rule, and unfortunately we had several breaches of this last game. This rule is in place for the protection of a subset of our players who are at risk of serious reactions from being in the vicinity of such allergens. We want to provide a safe environment for all our attendees, so we kindly ask that all players adhere to this.
