Hello there folks!
New editions of our Player Guide and Setting Supplement are now available!
We’re working on aligning our player-facing documentation for the year to come. As such, you can find new links to our updated New Player Guide and Setting Supplement. The Setting Supplement includes extra setting info that has gone out over previous events, posts along with new info from the event team, collated into one document for easy reading.
Insurance Update
In getting Five Oaths back up and running, we faced many issues, the most disruptive of which was finding insurance. In the 3 years since our last pre-Covid event, the insurance landscape changed dramatically, mostly due to insurers leaving the market due to Brexit and the aforementioned pandemic adding new considerations for group events. Previously, we the Event Team would have purchased insurance for the event as a whole, but this is nigh impossible for the kind of event we are trying to run in the current climate. LARP is a niche hobby, and rarely falls into the neat boxes an insurer would like an event to be.
As such, many of our players have been insured individually through Country Sports Ireland, having purchased insurance through us (Five Oaths) for one year- This initial purchase covers most of our playerbase through to the end of this season, including our three events. Until now, this insurance (or a similar insurance policy from a body that explicitly covers LARP) was the only available option, and was mandatory to attend a Five Oaths LARP event.
Going forwards, players without a Country Sports Ireland insurance policy may attend up to three Five Oaths events as a guest of the organisation, without outside insurance. After this point, they will be required to purchase insurance for future events, preferably through Country Sports Ireland, who have locked their rates in place through 2024.
Those players who already hold Country Sports Ireland insurance policies may feel disappointed at this announcement: We appreciate that purchasing a year’s worth of insurance, when six months later an avenue to attend without insurance opens up is a frustrating experience. We are immensely grateful to those of you who came back to the hobby after Covid, and we must stress that this is a new offering that was not possible when we ran our Summer 2022 event.
We believe that this new policy will be a boon to the game, as it facilitates new players trying out the game, and allows us to cover those whose third-party insurance policies may not sync up with our event timetable.
Upcoming Rules Changes and Character Creation
We’ve had loads of interest from new players as the hype builds for our Spring Event- This is super encouraging to see, and we’re looking forward to plenty of new faces around in 2023. That said, we would like to make the playerbase aware of an upcoming Rules update that will effect character creation. While we can still accept character backgrounds, any character stats are likely to be subject to change after the update.
This is a soft warning to not get too ‘attached’ to a specific build until the update goes live in a few weeks. We are still hammering out the fine details and getting the database updated, and will make all players aware of when the update goes live. Rest assured that while some aspects of creating a character for Five Oaths may change, the playstyles that current feats allow for will remain viable, and some new ones will come about from the changes we hope to implement.
For now, we’d like to ask you all to sit tight, and if you have any questions in the meantime email info@fiveoaths.com.
