There may be others that can be discovered, but these are available for anyone from Bruid, or with Five Realms Lore to travel to.

Regions

Suarachan’s Shoal

Named for a former Iarla of Baol, Suarachan’s Shoal is a deceptively shallow inlet of the Endless Sea, and is full of silt and hidden reefs. Its name recalls one of the few times in Baolach history that lowlanders and highlanders worked in concert. The Iarla of Bruid had called for aid in facing a great horde of Gwyllt that had overcome many settlements in western Bruid, and indeed threatened to surge through the Green Marches into Baol. As the Iarla of Baol at the time, Suarachan marshalled the ingenuity of the lowlanders and the bravery of the highlanders to ferry huge numbers of warriors across the Shoal into Bruid, attacking the Gwyllt from behind. Despite this famed example of the benefits of collaboration, legend has it the Baolach forces went right back to fighting amongst themselves after the battle was won, and Suarachan’s Shoal has never been dredged.

The Ghostmoor

Named for the restless dead which plague it as well as the general sense of unease that those who pass through experience, the Ghostmoor was the old frontier with the Great Forest before Bagrach’s Line was established. The Order of Necromancers maintain a semi-permanent presence here, seeking out those unhappy souls who died fighting the Gwyllt here and putting an end to the abominations they have now become. There were once many towns in this area, but those who once lived here have abandoned them in favour of less unsettled lands closer to the Great Forest.

The Great Forest

The primeval Great Forest covers the whole of southern Bruid. They say it stretches the whole way east as the southern coast of the Shaper’s Sea until the Eastern Reaches, although no mortal can boast of having made the journey. Those who live in Bruid will swear that the trees themselves are alive, and that the sprouting trees grow faster than anyone can believe. It is home to countless hordes of Gwyllt, wild beasts, and the undead spectres of those who have tried their mettle against the Forest and failed.

The Green Marches

The Green Marches, the shared borderlands between Baol, Bruid and Draíod are a hotpoint for raiding and small-scale warfare. Most of the merchants travelling in this area hire mercenaries or even gallóglaigh bands to protect themselves when passing through.

The Gulf

The Gulf is an enormous ragged hole in the earth deep within the Great Forest. The great chasm is a mile wide, and particularly in summer the Gwyllt boil out of it as if from a bubbling pot. The Gulf’s bottom – if it even has one – is shrouded in darkness. None have delved into its depths and returned to tell the tale.

The Razing

The Razing is an area in southern Bruid which most avoid at all cost. It remains as a symbol of the implacability of the Great Forest and the great sacrifices that must be made for victories against it. Many years ago, an Iarla of Bruid decided in an act of fury to set fire to the Great Forest and to have done with it forever. They succeeded in burning a small part of it, but the Forest had its revenge. Anyone who spends any amount of time in the Razing today finds that they are suffused with incredible pain, as if they are being burned alive.

The Shaper’s Pasture

The borderlands between Bruid and Uasa is one of the most densely populated in all the Five Realms…but more with sheep than people. This close to the capital cities of Corroch and Uaircinn there is less danger from banditry and strife between neighbouring Ridings, but roving Gwyllt and undead still pose trouble. Tensions can arise between Riders as to who is responsible for dealing with these incursions, and there have been years where the porous border between the two Realms has shifted north or south as Riders of one Realm or another decide enough is enough and take charge to put an end to a looming threat.

Ridings

Balla Adhmaid

One of the oldest Ridings in Bruid, Balla Adhmaid harks back to the days of Misneach. Misneach was the first Iarla of Bruid, and foster sibling of the First Réig themselves. The Riding is notable for the formidable fortification that surrounds the entire Riding, also making it one of the only Ridings in the entire Five Realms with a clear border between it and its neighbours. The wall was built in the days before Bagrach’s Line was established, and the Great Forest covered the entirety of Bruid. The walls are many centuries old now, but whatever craft or magic was used to build them has kept them firm. Those who visit find the black and craggy wood of Ball Adhmaid to be unnerving, and they tell stories afterwards that the walls seemed to groan and creak at night, perhaps calling out to their ancient kintrees in the Great Forest to return and lay low those who would dare to challenge the Forest’s rule over Bruid. The current Rider Brían O’Reilly is said to be in a dangerous mourning since the death of his husband Armando and son Alejandro.

Dun Hale

In the Spring 801 TR the Riding of Dun Hale was wiped out by the Smiling Gwyllt. New rider Cethern Mac Fintain aims to drive back the darkness of the Great Forest and turn Dun Hale into a thriving riding once more. Deeper in the forest, Croí Allta leads a group of wildlings who shun the trappings of civilisation and immerse themselves in the Forests’ vital rhythms of life and death. Through the intervention of Cumhacht na Réige, the two have agreed to peaceful co-existence, but both the settlers and wilderness dwellers face an uncertain future, surrounded by danger on all sides.

Dun Ilrin

Dun Ilrin takes up most of the eastern peninsula of Ilrin, and the folk there hold themselves proudly (some would say entirely too proudly) distinct from the rest of Bruid. They tell all sorts of legends about themselves, how the first settlers there befriended the huge talking eagles that lived on the Cliffs of Faire and rode them all over the world. Those eagles died out years ago, of course, but the Ilrinigh still boast. The rider of Dun Ilrin was a famous bard in his youth, and is still known as Lorcan Silvertongue, though these days his way with words is mostly used in negotiations with his belligerent neighbours to the west, always hungry for the good land in the Ilrin peninsula.

Settlements: Rathnead

Dídean

Overseen by the Leasiar Rider Gannclann, Dídean is comprised of several settlements both small and large that serve as a refuge and fresh start for those who were unsuccessful in settling in the Great Forest. Rumours circulate that before they were Rider, even before they were Counsellor, Gallóglaigh or a Peacesworn, Gannclann was the sole survivor of an attempt to settle deeper into the Great Forest than ever before; others say they were a vicious bandit who preyed on travellers through the Forest. Whatever the truth, Dídean is a welcome home to many unable to find a safe haven elsewhere in Bruid.

Settlements: Daracaoi

Garrtionál

Garrtionál is a small Riding within the Great Forest held by a Wildling named Iona. She makes her lodge at a place called Radharcréalt, where she holds revels that are the stuff of legend with her Forest Wildling cousins.

Lorbeer

The Riding surrounding Zahnhafen is one of the safest in Bruid, regularly patrolled by landbound Krieger in service of the Rider. The current Rider, Dieter Rua, takes a hard line with any bandits or smugglers caught in his riding, which some say is a grand irony…but never too loudly in his hearing. The riding is named for the trees the Krieger brought with them from their homeland, the lorbeer leaves produce a flavour the Krieger love but many others find too spicy.

Réiteach

Réiteach is deep in the Great Forest and comprised of several small settlements in cleared areas of the Forest, which make trade from cutting down fine and unusual trees and exporting both the lumber and intricately crafted carpentry goods, with tables and chairs from Réiteach settlements beginning to gain a market in Siabhal and the Baol lowlands. There are the settlements the stern Rider, Macabh Caernos would evidently prefer the public to focus on as opposed to the more unusual settlement of Siorghlas and the troubling rumours of dealings with the Gwyllt.

Settlements: Síorghlas

Sturmjammern

Named for the Kriegerish word for the howling winds that wrack the western coast of Bruid, Sturmjammern is a Riding close to Zahnhafen. It is currently ruled by Hansa Halfhand, an old comrade-in-arms of Dieter Rua, who arrived in Tirneach as a child. Hansa is rumoured to have been of a great lineage of Schlachtfeld, and Krieger in Zahnhafen mutter of the terrible fate that will befall their ancient homeland one day if Hansa does not return home to face her destiny. Hansa scoffs at this superstition, saying it is exactly this sort of smallmindedness that led her to leave the homeland in the first place. She has roughly denied any request from the Thing of Zahnhafen to discuss the truth of her origins.

Tríona’s Riding

A newer Riding deep in the Great Forest, Triona’s Riding is still presided over by Triona herself. Like many other Ridings of the same sort, it is in what is called a “calm spot” in the Forest, where the emanations of the Gwyllt are felt less keenly. The sages who prop up the bars of Siorghlas murmur that Triona’s Riding is doomed to fail, because it is only two days’ march away from the Gulf, the great chasm that yawns a mile wide in the Great Forest, and from which all sorts of terrible creatures crawl when the Gwyllt’s power is greatest. No one else has managed to make it for more than five years, but if anyone can, it may be Triona Nic Eibhlin and her followers, all of whom fought at the Battle of Traitors’ Tears.

Trágraig

The town of Trágráig and its surrounding Riding is a testament to Bruideach perseverance. One day around two hundred years ago travellers to the town found it completely empty, without a trace of life. The only clue to the disappearance was the symbol of a fiery sun which had been etched into the town square. Despite fear of the unexplained disaster, the town was resettled and prospered until several years ago when it came under the deprivations of the Smiling Gwyllt. The town once again survived, with the assistance of the gallóglaigh of Cumhacht na Réig. As the result of a strange ritual, the Riding is now protected by a former gallóglach known locally as “The Tiarna of Trágráig”. Despite initial misgivings, the Rider has established a working relationship with the so-called “Tiarna” and once again the town looks towards the future.

Settlements

Caola

Caola is a small town in western Bruid that lies by the Caol River. The town has traditionally been under the rule of the Mac Tire family, who are reputed to have come from Baol in ages past. The town is known in the region for the wicker baskets which the denizens weave from the rushes of the river.

Caorioc

Caorioc is the most northerly town in Bruid, and the only town outside of Uasa to be included in its canal network. The Iarlas of Bruid made their home here centuries ago, back when Caorioc was nothing more than a collection of huts where the shepherds of Bruid would rest when bringing their flocks together for the annual markets. In the intervening centuries, and as the Great Forest has receded further to the south, Caorioc has grown into a vibrant town and is a major hub for weavers and wool merchants. Some say the nobility and wealthy folk there are too far removed from the experience of most Bruidigh, but in what land is that not true?

Daracaoi

Daracaoi is a small hamlet in central Bruid, currently located on the northern edge of the Great Forest. The local Rider, a Leasiar named Gannclan, had spent many years establishing Daracaoi as a haven for those who are unsuccessful in settling in the Great Forest, however when the Forest expanded between 797 and 800 TR, Daracaoi was overrun. Recent efforts to push back the forest have brought some relief, however.

Dealtra

Dealtra is a large town in central Bruid, historically just beyond the reach of the forest. The local Rider, a Leasiar named Gannclan, lets it be known that there is always a place in Dealtra for those who have braved the Great Forest and been defeated. The Covenant run a wardhouse in the town for orphans of battles in the Great Forest whose families cannot be found.

Kyte’s Hold

Kyte’s Hold started life as a simple camp, but has become a permanent settlement over time, as the Bruidigh travel there to seek the wisdom of the Cailleach of Clann Kytelyr. The current head of the Hold, Amir Fehr Elsahouri, has married into the Clann, having started his life as a Weeping far to the east. He is vocal against the Tirneach superstitions regarding his people. Few dare to repeat the stories of the multiple tragedies that have befallen Elsahouri’s family in his hearing, lest they face his wrath.

Rathnead

The largest settlement on Dun Ilrin, Rathnead was built high on the cliffs that jut out into the Shaper’s Sea. The Ilrinigh say that it was built with the help of the giant eagles who once populated the peninsula, and indeed the settlement does have the look of a bird’s nest with buildings piled on top of one another. Each year the Rider holds a festival for bards, filí and storytellers from across Tirneach to come and tell the greatest tale. Legend has it that in centuries past even the Réig attended in disguise to try their hand at the craft.

Síorghlas

The only town of any note completely within the Great Forest, Siorghlas is a strange place. The town itself takes up a small footprint on the ground, and mostly it is only municipal buildings that stand on the earth. The rest of the town is up in the enormous trees of the forest itself, and rope bridges connect one trunk to another. Open flame is forbidden in Síorghlas for sensible reasons, but because the town is in perpetual gloom underneath the forest canopy, the townsfolk must resort to a bit of Gwyllt magic they cannot replace: the sun-crystals. An enterprising and gifted merchant that could provide them with an alternative to this cursed magic would be wealthy indeed. For now, Síorghlas is eerily lit and a hub for the other denizens of the Great Forest, both those who swear fealty to the Réig and those who have other allegiance.

Zahnhafen

The largest Kriegerish town in the Five Realms, this is the home of the Kriegerish fleet, even Kriegerish vessels in service of other Realms will often count this as their home port. The town that has sprung up around the deepwater harbour of Zahnhafen is set out in much the same pattern as the port towns in the Krieger homeland, or so they say. The town is ruled by an assembly of ship captains and wealthy and influential locals called the Thing, in a direct import from Schlachtfeld. Merchants and tradesfolk from all over the Five Realms converge in Zahnhafen to trade in the rare and affordable merchandise that flows off the Krieger ships and through the town. If some similar ships had earlier been sighted raiding other Realms in the past months…well what do landlubbers know about ships anyway?!

Places of Interest

Bagrach’s Line

Won by hundreds of lives and named for an early Iarla of Bruid, Bagrach’s Line is the watershed between the Great Forest and the “tamed” land of Bruid where most settlements now are. The saying is: “North of Bagrach’s Line put a lock on your door, south of it there’s no point. In recent years however, the forest has expanded well beyond this intangible border.

These are some of the many locations of Bruid.
